I agree with the author, rolling the old phone back to the service provider is a terrible waste of your resource. I've put my old iphones to work using the remote downloaded the HOME SECURITY APPS Presence and Manything and report great results.
The idea of permanent GPS in my car was not a priority, instead i make sure I have a charger installed with dual socket to charge 2 x Iphone and or an ipad which can also be used by passengers.
