Your lean business needs more fat

If your solo business isn't quite giving you the lifestyle you thought it would, here's where you're probably going wrong.
When you first imagined starting your own business, you probably envisaged flexible hours, half-days, more than four weeks a year for holidays, the ability to earn what you're worth, work-life balance, and doing something you love.

In short, you imagined a better life.

But for many soloists, this doesn't match the reality. Most of us know all too well about the low income, long hours, and lack of holidays that can come with being your own boss.

Why does this happen? it's because our businesses are too lean.

"When you set the goal of just supporting yourself, you make a miscalculation about the income your business needs to support your better life."

Here's what I mean by 'too lean'

too often soloists set their sights on "supporting themselves". In other words:

"I'd be happy if I could do what I love for a living, and just earn enough to pay my bills."

That's Nice.
The problem with this 'calculation' is it's totally out of whack. It's based on the cost of the bare necessities they need to survive: food, rent/mortgage, and other basic bills. That may be the cost of survival, but it's not the cost of the better life they imagined!

When you set the goal of just supporting yourself, you make a miscalculation about the income your business needs to support your better life.

Whats the cost?

You can't afford time off, or a holiday, or to hire help, or to invest in the business. You end up with no marketing budget, no insurance, no Xmas party, no staff developmet, and you don't get to invest in yourself (you never end up taking that life-altering week with Tony Robbins). You end up doing your own book-keeping, and your own marketing (Facebook of course because it's free), instead of doing what you love.

Sound Familiar?

What would a supportive business look like?

It's the lioness that does the hunting for her family. She needs to find enough food for herself and her cubs, and also to satisfy the voracious appetite of the protector of her family, the male lion. In the same way, you need to find enough income to feet yourself and all those who support your business and your life.

What would it take to support your better life?

You might need a couple of staff to make sure you're not chained to your desk 24/7, or maybe just an assistant, and you'll need to be a generous employer at that, if you want capable and loyal staff. Outside of work, a personal trainer and a regular babysitter might be at the top of your list.

Once you can see why "supporting yourself" is just not enough, you can begin to make a better calculation for the income you'll need to support your better life, and form a business model that will get you there.

 How to get there

You may need higher profit margins, higher income goals, and higher sales targets. You may need more staff, more marketing, or a more valuable product or service. Perhaps you need to work (and save) a little longer in your day job and launch with a bigger budget.
But mostly it's a fundamental realisation that you need more food to go around! you need to feed your accountant, your insurance agent, your employees or an assistant, and yourself so you can take a weekend off (or god forbid a Monday) without feeling guilty.

Your happiness costs more than food and rent

You are your own boss, and to be happy you need the capacity to be generous to yourself. Better pay, regular time off, and support (assistant, book-keeper, cleaner, babysitter) will make you happier. You'll be a better spouse, parent, employer, and business owner, and you'll have the capacity to be more generous to the people you care about (family, friends, employees, and clients)

But you can't be generous if you don't have much time to give. So raise your income goals, adjust your business model, and fatten up your business.

If you had more time and money in your business, where would it go? an assistant? Pay rise? Holiday? Salesperson? Babysitter? Personal Trainer? Less overtime? Somewhere else?

10 Steps To Becoming A Millionaire By 30

Getting rich and becoming a millionaire is a taboo topic. Saying it can be done by the age of 30 seems like a fantasy. It shouldn't be taboo and it is possible.
At the age of 21, I got out of college, broke and in debt, and by the time I was 30, I was a millionaire. Here are the ten steps that guarantee you will become a millionaire by 30.
Margot-Robbie-nude-full-frontal-very-hot-and-others-full-nude-in-The-Wolf-of-Wall-Street-2013-hd720p-13

1. Follow the Money.
In today’s economic environment, you cannot save your way to millionaire status. The first step is to focus on increasing your income in increments and repeating that.
My income was $3,000 a month and nine years later it was $20,000 a month. Start following the money and it will force you to control revenue and see opportunities.

2. Don’t Show Off – Show Up.
didn't buy my first luxury watch or car until my businesses and investments were producing multiple secure flows of income.
I was still driving a Toyota Camry when I had become a millionaire. Be known for your work ethic, not the trinkets you buy.

3. Save to Invest, Don’t Save To Save.
The only reason to save money is to invest it.  Put your saved money into secured, sacred (untouchable) accounts. Never use these accounts for anything – not even an emergency.
This will force you to continue to follow step one (increase income). Still to this day, at least twice a year I am broke because I always invest my surpluses into ventures I cannot access.

4. Avoid Debt That Doesn't Pay You.
Make it a rule that you never use debt that won’t make you money.  I borrowed money for a car only because I knew I could increase my income.
Rich people use debt to leverage investments and grow cash flows. Poor people use debt to buy things that make rich people richer.

5. Treat Money Like a Jealous Lover.
Millions wish for financial freedom, and only those who make it a priority have millions. To get rich and stay rich, you will have to make it a priority.
Money is like a jealous lover. Ignore it and it will ignore you, or worse, it will leave you for someone who makes it a priority.

6. Money Doesn't Sleep.
Money doesn't know about clocks, schedules or holidays and you shouldn't, either. Money loves people that have great work ethic.
When I was 26 years old, I was in retail and the store I worked in closed at 7 pm; most times you could find me there at 11 pm, making an extra sale. Never try to be the smartest or luckiest person; just make sure you outwork everyone.

7. Poor Makes No Sense.
I have been poor and it sucks. I have had just enough and that sucks almost as bad. Eliminate any and all ideas that being poor is somehow okay.
Bill Gates said to a group of college grads, “It’s not your fault if you were born poor; it is your fault if you stay poor.”

8. Get a Millionaire Mentor.
Most of us are brought up middle class or poor and then hold ourselves to the limits and ideas of that group. I have been studying millionaires in order to duplicate what they did.
Get your own personal millionaire mentor and study him or her. Most rich people are extremely generous with their knowledge and their resources.

9. Get Your Money to Do the Heavy Lifting.
Investing is the Holy Grail in becoming a millionaire and you should make more money off your investments than your work.
If you don’t have surplus money you won’t make investments. The second company I started required a $50,000 investment. That company has paid me back that $50,000 every month for the last ten years.
My third investment was in real estate where I started with $350,000, a large part of my net worth at the time. I still own that property today and it continues to provide me with income.
Investing is the only reason to do the other steps, and your money must work for you and do your heavy lifting.

10. Shoot for $10 million, not $1 million.
The single biggest financial mistake I've made was not thinking big enough. I encourage you to go for more than a million.
There is no shortage of money on this planet, only a shortage of people thinking big enough.
Apply these 10 steps and they will make you rich. Steer clear of people who suggest your financial dreams are born of greed.
Avoid get-rich-quick schemes, be ethical, never give up and once you make it, be willing to help others get there, too.
Let me know when you get there.

Be great. Nothing else pays.

Four Reasons Why Honesty is a Good Business Decision

No one is void of error. So you would think it would be more acceptable when we make mistakes right? It seems logical, but it’s certainly not that easy in real life. I bet you can turn on the television this very second and find one political party bashing the other for what they consider to be a mistake in judgment or policy. No one wants to admit anything, yet we know we have the right to make mistakes. But we also have the right to own up to those mistakes, learn from them and become an example for others by doing what’s right. These actions are much easier said than done.
"Have the courage to say No. Have the courage to face the Truth. Do the right thing because it is right. These are the magic keys to living your life with integrity. ~ W. Clement Stone"

1. Honesty takes courage, especially in business.

It takes a heck of a lot of courage to admit to making a mistake yet there are those who stand up and face the fury anyway. People respect and often follow the courageous, the fearless and the warriors who stand up for what is right even when it hurts. People want to work for a cause they can believe in. You cannot expect your team to believe in a cause if their leader doesn't have the guts to put aside ego and fight for it themselves.
Honest people show true leadership qualities in their everyday life. These characteristics, no doubt are the makings of a good business person. It’s inevitable that there will be bad times, you’ll experience hardship and extreme challenges on the journey to success, but it is crucial to the success of any business that the foundation is built on solid and honest ground. Without it, you are limiting the longevity of your success and those who have blindly followed you.
"If you want to test a man's character, give him power. ~ Abraham Lincoln"

2. An honest person does not allow circumstance or title’s to compromise integrity.

Those who remain truthful regardless of the outcome are often viewed as our greatest leaders, recognized as hero’s and admired for their good work.
Take a look at American leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and President Abraham Lincoln (“Honest Abe”). These leaders adopted honesty as a way of life. While serving, they courageously remained consistent in their beliefs of integrity and righteousness. Even through many tough times, they never backed down or compromised their integrity to please others. There was simply no question about who these men were and what they stood for. Today we hold their legacy’s in high regard, many of us hoping to impact the lives of others just as they have impacted ours. I believe this is still possible; even in the today’s society (see the Honest Model).

3. Honest business owners have loyal customers.

No one wants to be in business with someone they can’t trust. Would you? Your customers/clients don’t want to get the runaround when they need a problem fixed. They don’t like to hear excuses as to why you have failed to deliver what they want. They want you to acknowledge the mistake, find out what it will take to fix it and actually fix it or come darn close to making it better. When you have loyal customers, you have not only developed a trust with them, they will refer those whom they also trust to you. Bottom line – if you can’t admit to a mistake and sacrifice your ego for the sake of the greater good, then you shouldn't be in business.

4. Honesty requires a bravery only possessed by great leaders.

Not everyone is up for the challenge, nor are they equipped with the wisdom, discernment and compassion it takes to deliver such a service. You see, it is simply easier to lie. We go through life often “playing nice” to people because we don’t want to ruffle any feathers, hurt any ego’s or state the obvious. We don’t want to be the one that said it – whatever “it” may be. But a good leader doesn't get caught up in the glamour of saving face. A good leader is empathetic, respectful and clear when delivering a much needed message. True leaders are often busy focusing on the greater good, solving problems, helping the masses and securing the safety and security of those who need it most. This is done without apology and is certainly not a job for the faint at heart.
Like dishonesty, honesty is a risk; however there is clear distinction between the two. While an honest person will take control of a situation; mentally preparing themselves for a reaction, be it good or bad, a dishonest person will leave a reaction to truth up to chance. Instead they choose to be unprepared to face the havoc likely forthcoming when they least expect it. Now I wouldn't call that a guaranteed success strategy, would you?
When you are honest, you don’t have to worry about remembering what to cover up and how to keep things under wraps, leaving your business at risk. You can confidently continue to grow your business, building the culture of your organization to operate ethically and responsibly even when you are not there to see it.
When candid communication and trust are in the bones of your business, there is no such thing as competition.
Having experience and knowledge doesn't make a great leader; these qualities make a great worker. A great leader is courageous; consistently displaying good character, morals and a genuine heart. Knowing the difference can make or break your legacy.
"I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. ~Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr."

Seven secrets to a Successful Leader

Mark is up with the best of them

Mark Taylor (linkedin) newly appointed Managing Director at Central Insurance Brokers, Perth WA

Most everyone has a New Year’s resolution they aim to stick to, whether it’s working out or learning an instrument, but do you have a professional aim this year?

Improving your leadership skills could lead to great opportunities in 2015 and beyond and leadership.

Suggest a solution, but always begin with problems.

“Every time you say, ‘It’s not that bad,’ you minimise the value of any solutions you find,” says Rockwell. “Never minimise the pain and frustration of others, even when it seems small to you.”

Stop thinking about perfection

“Don’t talk yourself out of imperfect solutions unless you have better ones,” warns Rockwell.

Taking action and improving the situation is better than doing nothing and letting
it be idle. According to Rockwell, it’s better to talk yourself into action, rather than out of action.

He urges leaders to consider these three questions before they talk themselves out of taking action.

Will it help?

Will it harm?

What happens
nothing is done?

Learn while you take action

“Don’t talk about it unless you plan to do something about it,” says Rockwell.

“Welcome those who point out troubles. They aren't the enemy. The enemy is talk without anything being done.”

Focus on getting people in the
correct roles
“Successful leaders understand and influence the talents, skills, and drives of team members,” says Rockwell. He suggests providing leadership and personality assessments to gain a better understanding of what motivates your employees and find out what they’re best at.

Energising environments

In other words, be positive! “The most important thing is about the way we treat each other while we do the work,” says Rockwell. “Spend more time affirming than correcting.”

Embrace forward facing contrarians

“Conformists don’t build the future,” says Rockwell – forward facing contrarians do. “Protect them from the frustrations of others, as much as possible.”

Results don’t define you

According to Rockwell, “The road to great results is more important than results themselves. Honour behaviours that get you there.

LinkedIn is now megga stream for business links

With more than 90 million registered users...  LinkedIn is the number one social media platform for  white-collared professionals today. Are you using it effectively?

LinkedIn is like an online resume, but scratch a bit deeper and it’s a platform for demonstrating your expertise and connecting with an online network. It’s nothing short of a source of raw possibilities.y
Whether you are a business owner or an employee, LinkedIn needs to be a part of your digital real estate and your online social presence.

What should you have on your profile?

There are numerous opportunities to highlight expertise and focus on interests within LinkedIn. The LinkedIn profile has a standard framework around which information can be added. There is an extensive field for a summary of your career profile, and a more limited field to provide details of your current position, past positions, education, recommendations, connections, and websites.
You’re in full control of what is displayed on the profile.

Improve your SEO with LinkedIn

“ LinkedIn needs to be a part of your digital real estate and your online social presence. ”
Spend as much time as you need to developing your LinkedIn profile, and remember that because it’s online, it needs to be SEO-savvy. In fact, you can use LinkedIn to help your search engine optimisation (SEO), since when your name is searched on Google, your LinkedIn profile will appear high in the search results.
You might even want to engage an SEO copywriter and get them to work their magic and create an engaging business profile specifically for LinkedIn that outlines your achievements and successes

Receive weekly updates on your network

The single business email that I receive and most importantly I take the time to read every week is the LinkedIn Network Updates email. If you’re not receiving this email, you need to change your LinkedIn email settings. (Select Settings / Receiving Messages, and at the Network Updates line, choose Weekly Digest Email).
This email summarises the major activities of your network over the past week: profile updates, new connections, new posts, new LinkedIn groups they’ve joined, new photos, new recommendations, polls, and applications (like Reading List by Amazon and TripIt).
Likewise using the ‘Share an update’ feature enables you to stay in front of your network on a weekly basis.
